El Dia in Football

1. When will the Saints acquire defensive backs who can actually play in the NFL (Mike McKenzie excluded)? I'm sure some of these guys, Fred Thomas, Jason David, etc., were good in Pop Warner, and in high school. They probably did pretty well in college too. It seems though, that the NFL might be too tough. There's no shame in that. There are a lot of guys who can't make it in the pros. Where is Dave Waymer when we need him? Oh. He's dead.

2. From the "Piss Poor Coaching Department": You are Mississippi State. More accurately, you are Sly Croom. You are playing in the Liberty Bowl. Your team has sucked for a long time, and now you get to play in a bowl game. You are losing 3-0 to Central Florida with 7:15 left in the second quarter. You have first and goal at the UCF 5. You take the clock down to under a minute-thirty and you have fourth and goal. In the second quarter of the Liberty Bowl. A bowl game. You kick a field goal. Why? Why don't you go for it? Explain.

Ne'er to Be Seen In

1. Jared (the Galleria of Jewelry; how can I go to a jewelry store named after the fat Subway guy; also, what exactly is the difference between a Galleria and a Store?)

2. Kay (so far, two jewelry stores; every kiss begins with k, no shit; oh...Kay, I get it; it still sucks)

3. Zales (reminds me too much of Service Merchandise, which made me uncomfortable because they always had to get the stuff out of the back and chuck it on a conveyer belt for no real reason)

On the Champs Sports Bowl

Things:

1. Boston College has one of the better QB's in the college game yet, with about three minutes to play and clinging to a three point lead over a totally overmatched Michigan State team, they decide to start running the ball. In a bowl game. That has no real meaning to anyone. For the love of God, stick to what works for you. God help us all if coaches start taking risks in second-tier bowl games. They'll always remember that you lost the 2007 Champs Sports Bowl. Always.

2. This isn't exactly about the game itself, but about BC football in 2007. Here's my issue. BC apologists talk often about their desire (which I think they rarely back up with any real action) to make BC a legitimate contender for the national championship, or at least have the ability to contend for a BCS bowl (by the way, more on the irrelevance of bowls later). Here is what BCS contenders absolutely cannot do: lose at home to a bad Florida State team, when everything is going in your favor. Win the games you should win.
